Rugby Canada name Allen Vansen new CEO

Allen Vansen, a former executive for both the Toronto Pan Am Games and the Vancouver Olympics, is the new chief executive officer for Rugby Canada.

Vansen comes into an organization which has a successful women’s program, a struggling men’s program and an ever-present battle to establish a place in the Canadian sports landscape. Will he find new sources of sponsorship revenue? Will he find new ways to leverage the Olympic position of rugby sevens? Will he find new ways for men’s rugby to push out professional players?

There’s a lot on the table.

For last summer’s Pan Ams in Toronto, he was “Executive Vice President – Operations, Sport & Venue Management.” Before that, he was VANOC’s vice president, workforce operations & integration.

He’s originally from Newfoundland, where he worked originally as a ski coach, before moving into resort and event management roles. VANOC was his first employer outside of Newfoundland.

Vansen takes over for interim CEO Mark Lemmon, who filled the role after Graham Brown stepped down after the Rugby World Cup in October.

According to his LinkedIn profile,

From the Atlantic to the Pacific and parts in between, I’ve been fortunate to combine my personal interests of sports, hospitality and people with a career of successful large-scale, high-profile events and operations.

Most recently as the Executive Vice President, Operations, Sport & Venue Management of the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games – the largest multi-sport Games ever hosted in Canada – I am immensely proud of the work the 5 divisions (700+ staff and 12,000+ volunteers) reporting to me accomplished. Collaborating with multiple levels of government, international stakeholders, external contractors, media and governing bodies, we delivered operational services with a $6+ M budget surplus, exceeded operational service revenue targets by $9+ M, and led the $700 M capital projects contract close-outs with of a surplus of over $55 M.

Prior to #TO2015 I oversaw the planning, management and delivery of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games workforce. With a staff of 100+, I led the recruitment and training programs for 25,000 volunteers and, prior that, I was in charge of the operational planning process for 40+ functions for venue operational planning.

Earlier in my career I had the privilege of managing award-winning resorts as well as consulting with international resort development firms. An avid fan of the outdoors, I also served as the Managing Director of Corner Brook Triathlon, one of Canada’s longest running annual triathlon’s, and Program Director & Head Coach of a Provincial alpine ski team and one of Atlantic Canada’s largest ski clubs.
